Studying the entry sequence of 19th street revealed many challenges to overcome: a long and dark tunnel, narrow sidewalks, no perspective. In repose we’re proposing to keep one side of the tunnel for vehicular access, and convert the other for use by pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, we are proposing the removal of the last lid to shorten the distance of the tunnel, and visually extend the park into Main Street. By keeping the plaza at the tunnel exit free of structure, we preserve a visual corridor directly the water’s edge.
